Two things decide that, and neither is what people expect. The Suffolk County Water Authority supplies this area from the Long Island aquifer system, and the US Geological Survey describes water from those aquifers as having exceptionally small dissolved solids — under forty milligrams per litre — which is the opposite of hard. What USGS does flag is that the water is commonly below pH 6.0 and therefore corrosive to pipes, pumps and plumbing, and that iron is locally excessive in places. If you have orange staining on fixtures and laundry or sediment in aerators, that is an iron and corrosivity conversation, not a softener one. If you want certainty for your own address, a test is the only honest basis for a recommendation.
