It matters more than the finished-room shots suggest. A dormer with a bathroom, a kitchen with a new gas cooktop, an extension that needs heat — each one needs licensed gas and plumbing work before anything gets closed up. At the estimate, before anything is scheduled. It is worth asking even if you think you will not need it, because knowing it is there changes what you are willing to consider fixing properly.
The price of the job. The quote is the quote whether you finance it or not — and on a straightforward repair it is usually not worth the paperwork. We will tell you which one you are looking at.
These are gas services, trenches, risers and meters. It is not the photogenic end of contracting, and it is the part where getting it wrong matters most.
On the trench photographs, look for the tape. The yellow warning tape laid in the trench above a buried gas line is there for the person who digs in that garden in fifteen years with no idea what is underneath it. It is buried immediately and nobody inspecting the finished lawn will ever know whether it went in. That is exactly why it is worth photographing.
On the riser and meter pictures, look at support and access. A gas riser should be properly secured to the structure rather than relying on the pipe itself for rigidity, and the shutoff needs to be reachable by somebody who is in a hurry and possibly frightened. Where the pipe passes through siding the penetration should be sealed properly — that is a weather and a pest question before it is a tidiness one.
And look at what is around the work. Whether the siding was cut cleanly, whether the mulch bed and the lawn were made good, whether the finished job looks like somebody cared what the house looked like afterwards. Gas work is safety-critical and the safety is invisible in a photograph, so the visible care is a reasonable proxy for the invisible kind.
The honest caption for this album is that most of it is underground or behind a wall now. Publishing it is the only way to show it at all.

Warning tape laid above a buried gas line before the trench is backfilled. Its entire purpose is to be found by whoever digs in that ground years later, before their spade reaches the pipe. It is covered up within the hour and no inspection of a finished lawn will ever tell you whether it went in, which is why it is one of the things worth photographing at the time.
Because this is the part of the work that is safety-critical and completely invisible once it is finished. Anybody can show you a tidy finished job. Very little of a gas service is visible afterwards — the bedding under the pipe, the warning tape, how the riser is secured, whether the penetration through the siding was sealed properly. If you are choosing somebody for gas work, the photographs from during the job are the only ones that tell you anything.
As close as the work allows, yes, and it is fair to ask. Gas work is judged on things you cannot see, so how a company leaves the visible parts — the lawn made good, the mulch bed put back, the siding cut cleanly and sealed — is a reasonable indication of the care taken with the parts you cannot inspect. It is not proof of anything, but it is not nothing either.
