Look at what is in the rooms. Radiators or baseboard along the walls means a boiler, heating water or steam and circulating it. Vents or registers blowing warm air means a furnace with ductwork. A wall-mounted indoor unit means a ductless heat pump, which heats as well as cools. Warm floors with nothing visible means radiant. It matters because it decides almost everything else — a boiler house and a furnace house share a thermostat and very little else, and the same symptom points at completely different parts.

It changes a lot, and older Long Island houses have both. Hot water systems have a circulator pump, usually a pressure gauge reading in the low tens of psi, and pipes running to and from each radiator. Steam systems have one pipe to each radiator, a vent on the side of it, a sight glass on the boiler, and they hiss and knock as they come up. Steam is less forgiving: it needs correct water level, working vents and proper pitch on the pipes, and a lot of what gets diagnosed as a failing steam boiler is actually venting or pitch. Worth having someone who works on them regularly rather than someone who mostly does forced air.

Realistic, and increasingly common — a ductless system is a heat pump, and it heats as well as it cools. It suits the spaces that are hardest to heat with what the house already has: converted attics, additions, sunrooms and rooms at the end of a long run that the boiler never really reached. Where people get caught out is assuming it replaces the whole heating system in an older house. Sometimes it does and sometimes it works better alongside what is there, and which of those is true depends on the building rather than the brochure. Usually not. Uneven heat is far more often distribution or controls than the heat source — trapped air in the upper radiators, a circulator or zone valve not doing its job, an unbalanced system, blocked or leaking ducts on a forced-air house, or a thermostat reading a spot that is not representative of the room. All of those follow you to a new boiler if nobody diagnoses them first, which is the expensive way to find out. It is worth a diagnostic visit before a replacement quote, and we will tell you plainly when the unit is fine.

Fifteen to twenty-five years is the usual range depending on the type, the fuel and how well it has been maintained. Age alone is not a reason to replace — a well-serviced older unit with one failed control is often worth repairing. A cracked heat exchanger or a failed boiler section is a different matter.

Uneven heat usually points at distribution rather than the boiler or furnace itself — unbalanced zones, air trapped in the system, a failed circulator or zone valve, or ductwork that was never sized correctly. It is worth diagnosing properly, because replacing the heating plant will not fix a distribution problem — and since we handle the plumbing and the heating, balancing zones, replacing a circulator or correcting ductwork is the same team and usually a fraction of the cost of a new boiler.
