Dix Hills is a hamlet in the Town of Huntington — sixteen square miles, around eight thousand three hundred homes, and nearly ninety-five per cent of them detached single-family on generous lots. Village incorporation was attempted twice and failed both times, so it is governed directly by the Town and permits run through the Town of Huntington Department of Engineering Services.
The houses are larger than most of our service area and they are older than most people assume. The median Dix Hills home was built in 1970, and roughly three quarters of the stock predates 1980 — only about five per cent went up after 2000. Copper supply piping has a design life of fifty to seventy years, which puts the bulk of Dix Hills squarely inside the window where pinhole leaks start and repipes stop being optional. Add multiple heating zones across a big footprint and you have a housing stock that needs real mechanical work rather than patching.

Dix Hills Is Not On Public Sewer
This is the single biggest practical difference between Dix Hills and the Babylon towns nearer our shop. Suffolk County publishes its sewered-areas maps by town, and none of the Huntington sewer districts covers Dix Hills. The only wastewater treatment infrastructure inside the hamlet on those maps is a pair of small private plants serving individual developments. Everything else is on an individual cesspool or septic system.
That changes what a plumbing problem usually is here. A slow drain across the whole house is more often a failing system than a blocked branch. A wet patch in the lawn in August is not a sprinkler fault. And any renovation that adds fixtures or bedrooms has to reckon with what the existing system can actually take.
It also puts Dix Hills inside the Suffolk County Septic Improvement Program, part of Reclaim Our Water, which grants money toward replacing an outdated cesspool or septic system with a nitrogen-reducing innovative and alternative system. As of the funding increase signed in July 2025 the state and county portions combined reach up to thirty-five thousand dollars per household, with the balance financeable over fifteen years. We do not administer the programme and the amounts have been revised more than once — check reclaimourwater.info for the current figures and eligibility before you count on them.

Can I do my own gas piping if I own the house?
No. Town of Huntington code allows a homeowner to work on the plumbing in their own one or two family dwelling without a licence, but that exemption explicitly excludes gas piping. Gas work in Huntington requires a licensed contractor and a permit, and the permit regime covers natural gas and LP piping specifically.
Do you work on oil heat, or only gas?
Both, and propane. Natural gas availability on Long Island is determined address by address — National Grid confirms whether a main is close enough to your particular house — so plenty of Dix Hills homes are still on oil or propane and will be for some time. Who issues the permit in Dix Hills?
The Town of Huntington Department of Engineering Services. Dix Hills is an unincorporated hamlet with no village government, so there is no second department involved. Permits are required for plumbing installation, repair or modification, and for natural gas and LP piping.
