The rate you are told is the rate
You get the number on the phone, before anyone is dispatched, and it is what you are charged when the technician arrives. One rate across all four trades — plumbing, heating, cooling and gas.
What it pays for
A licensed, insured technician carrying the certifications the work needs, and the time to find what has actually failed — not a quick look and a guess.
Watch for the bait and switch
A call-out advertised at almost nothing gets recovered once someone is standing in your basement. Get the number before anyone travels — from us, or from anyone else you call — and hold them to it when they arrive.
Financing on larger jobs
A boiler that fails in January is not a purchase anyone planned. Financing is available on the big-ticket work, so a system replacement does not have to come out of savings in one go.

Boiler, furnace and water heater replacement, a full air conditioning system, a whole-house repipe, sewer and water main work, and larger contracting jobs — kitchens, bathrooms, dormers and extensions.
When to bring it up
At the estimate, before anything is scheduled. It is worth asking even if you think you will not need it, because knowing it is there changes what you are willing to consider fixing properly.

How To Look At These
The Parts Of A Cooling Installation Worth Examining
A condenser sitting outside a house looks much the same whoever put it there. The differences are in details you can see in a photograph once you know to look.
The line set is the giveaway. The insulated copper running between the outdoor unit and the indoor coil should be insulated continuously, with no bare sections at the bends or where it enters the wall, and the insulation outdoors needs protecting from sunlight or it degrades and crumbles within a few seasons. Bare or perished line set insulation costs efficiency every hour the system runs, and it is the single most common thing we see done carelessly.
Then the siting of the outdoor unit. It should be level, on a pad that will stay level rather than settling into a lawn, and with genuine clearance around it — a condenser has to reject heat, and one boxed into a corner or tight against a fence is fighting its own exhaust. Where the penetration passes through the wall it should be properly sealed, which is a pest and a draught question as much as a neatness one.
On the commercial and rooftop photographs, look at access. A rooftop unit needs room to open its panels and get a service technician around it, and a curb that sheds water rather than ponding against it. Equipment that cannot be reached comfortably does not get serviced properly, which shortens its life in a way nobody attributes to the installation years later.
And a note on the crane picture: rooftop equipment being flown in is not showing off. It is the part of the job that needs planning, rigging and usually a road closure, and it is the reason commercial cooling replacements are scheduled rather than squeezed in.

What should I look for in these photographs?
The line set first — the insulated copper between the outdoor unit and the indoor coil. It should be insulated continuously with nothing bare at the bends or the wall entry, and the outdoor run needs protecting from sunlight or the insulation perishes within a few seasons. Then whether the condenser is level, on a pad that will stay level, with real clearance around it. A unit boxed into a tight corner is recirculating its own hot air and will never perform to its rating.
Does line set insulation really matter that much?
It costs you efficiency every hour the system runs, and it is the most common thing we see skimped. The refrigerant lines carry the heat you are paying to move; leaving sections bare or letting the outdoor insulation crumble in the sun means part of that work is wasted before it reaches the house. It takes a small amount of extra care at installation and it is very visible in a photograph, which is why it is a good thing to check.
Why is there a picture of a crane?
Because that is a real part of commercial rooftop work rather than a flourish. Getting a unit onto a roof needs rigging, planning and often a road closure, and it is the reason a commercial cooling replacement is a scheduled project rather than something squeezed into a morning. If you run a building with rooftop equipment, that is the part of the job worth talking about early.
