Radiant Floor Heating Installation On Long Island
Radiant floor heating warms the floor, and the floor warms the room. There is no blower, no vents, no draught and nothing to hear. It also heats from the bottom up, which is the opposite of how a radiator works and the reason a room at the same thermostat setting feels warmer — your feet are on the warm surface rather than the cold one.
The catch is that it is easiest to install when the floor is already open. That makes renovations, additions and new builds the natural moment, and retrofitting under an existing finished floor considerably more involved. The rate you are told is the rate

Watch for the bait and switch

Financing on larger jobs
A boiler that fails in January is not a purchase anyone planned. Financing is available on the big-ticket work, so a system replacement does not have to come out of savings in one go.

Hydronic Or Electric
Two Very Different Systems
Hydronic radiant circulates warm water through tubing in or under the floor, driven by a boiler or heat pump. It is the option for heating whole rooms or whole houses — cheaper to run, and it pairs particularly well with condensing boilers and geothermal because it works at low water temperatures, which is exactly where those are most efficient.
Electric radiant is a heating mat or cable under the floor finish. It is far simpler and cheaper to install, which makes it the usual answer for a single bathroom where the goal is a warm tile floor rather than heating the space. It costs more per unit of heat to run, so it rarely makes sense as a whole-house system. Which one suits you is mostly about scale, and we install both.

Can radiant heating be retrofitted into an existing house?
Sometimes, and the honest answer depends on the construction. During a renovation when floors are coming up anyway, it is straightforward. Under an existing finished floor it is far more involved — it may mean working from below where there is access, or raising the floor level. We will look and tell you what is realistic rather than quoting for something that will not work well.
What is the difference between hydronic and electric radiant?
Hydronic circulates warm water through tubing, driven by a boiler or heat pump — that is the option for heating whole rooms or whole houses, and it is cheaper to run. Electric is a mat or cable under the floor finish, much simpler to install, and generally used for a single bathroom where the aim is a warm floor rather than heating the space. Does radiant work under any floor covering?
It works best under materials that conduct heat well — tile and stone are ideal. Engineered wood and vinyl are generally fine within the manufacturer’s temperature limits. Thick carpet with heavy underlay is the problem case, because it insulates the floor from the room, which is the opposite of what you want.
Is radiant more efficient than radiators?
It can be, mainly because it runs at lower water temperatures. That matters most with a condensing boiler or a heat pump, both of which are more efficient the cooler the return water. It also heats more evenly, so a room can feel comfortable at a slightly lower thermostat setting.
How long does radiant take to warm up?
Longer than a radiator, because it heats the floor mass first. That is why radiant is usually run more steadily rather than switched on and off sharply. The upside is that it holds temperature well once warm, and the heat is far more even.
Can I heat just one bathroom?
Yes, and that is the most common radiant job there is. For a single bathroom floor, electric under-tile heating is usually the sensible answer — much simpler and cheaper to install than extending a hydronic system for one room.
Does it work with geothermal?
Extremely well. Radiant runs at low water temperatures, which is exactly where a ground-source heat pump is most efficient. Since we install both, they can be designed together as one system rather than made to cooperate afterwards.

Couldn't be happier with NJM Mechanical and Neil. I needed a new Navien wall mounted gas combination boiler. He showed up on Friday afternoon to diagnose and was at my house at 7am the very next morning on a Saturday throwing in my new Boiler.
