We don’t charge to quote a job. We do charge to find a problem nobody has identified yet. Which one you need — and what it costs — gets agreed on the phone, so nothing about the cost is a surprise on the doorstep.
The rate you are told is the rate
You get the number on the phone, before anyone is dispatched, and it is what you are charged when the technician arrives. One rate across all four trades — plumbing, heating, cooling and gas.
What it pays for
A licensed, insured technician carrying the certifications the work needs, and the time to find what has actually failed — not a quick look and a guess.
Watch for the bait and switch
A call-out advertised at almost nothing gets recovered once someone is standing in your basement. Get the number before anyone travels — from us, or from anyone else you call — and hold them to it when they arrive.
Financing on larger jobs
A boiler that fails in January is not a purchase anyone planned. Financing is available on the big-ticket work, so a system replacement does not have to come out of savings in one go.
What it is normally used for
Boiler, furnace and water heater replacement, a full air conditioning system, a whole-house repipe, sewer and water main work, and larger contracting jobs — kitchens, bathrooms, dormers and extensions.
When to bring it up
At the estimate, before anything is scheduled. It is worth asking even if you think you will not need it, because knowing it is there changes what you are willing to consider fixing properly.

Common Faults
What Usually Goes Wrong
Most calls we take fall into one of these. Recognise yours and you already know roughly what the visit involves.
Running But Not Cooling
The system hums along and the air coming out is barely cool. Usually a refrigerant leak, a dirty condenser coil, or a compressor that is no longer doing its job. Worth calling early — running a system low on refrigerant is what kills compressors.
Will Not Turn On At All
No sound, no response from the thermostat. Often a tripped breaker, a blown capacitor, a failed contactor, or a safety switch that has done exactly what it is supposed to do. Cheap to fix if that is all it is.
Frozen Coils Or Iced Lines
Ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil almost always means restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Shut the system off and let it thaw before we arrive, or the tech cannot get a reading. Running it frozen makes the damage worse.
Failed Capacitor
The most common single failure in a residential AC, and one of the least expensive. Symptoms are a humming outdoor unit with a fan that will not spin, or a system that struggles to start. Heat is hard on capacitors, which is why they fail in August.
Compressor Failure
The expensive one. A dead compressor on an older system is the point where repair versus replacement becomes a real conversation. We will lay out both numbers in the same visit rather than steering you, so you can decide once instead of paying for a repair and then replacing anyway.
Low Refrigerant Or A Leak
Air conditioners do not consume refrigerant. If yours is low, it is leaking, and topping it up without finding the leak just means paying again next season. We locate the leak first.
Blower Motor Or Fan Trouble
Weak airflow at the vents, squealing, or a fan that will not start. Sometimes the motor, sometimes the capacitor driving it, sometimes a belt or a clogged filter starving the system of air.
Water Leaking Indoors
A clogged condensate drain backing up around the air handler. Left alone it damages ceilings and floors, and on Long Island humidity it clogs faster than most people expect.
Repair Or Replace
When Repair Stops Making Sense
Most central air systems run somewhere in the range of ten to fifteen years before major components start to go, and window and wall units generally less. Age alone does not condemn a system — a well-maintained twelve-year-old unit with a bad capacitor is worth fixing. A ten-year-old system on its second compressor is not.
The other factor is refrigerant. Systems built before roughly 2010 typically run on R-22, and US production and import of new R-22 ended in 2020. Only reclaimed supply remains, which makes a large leak repair on an R-22 system a poor investment even when the repair itself is straightforward. We will tell you which side of that line your system falls on before you spend anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my central AC running but not cooling the house?
The most common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty or blocked condenser coil, a failing compressor, or restricted airflow from a clogged filter. If the air from the vents is moving but not cold, the problem is usually refrigerant or the compressor. If the airflow itself is weak, start by checking the filter before you call anyone.
What causes the AC lines to freeze up?
Ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil means the coil is getting colder than it should, and that comes down to either restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Dirty filters, blocked return vents and a failing blower are the usual airflow culprits. Turn the system off and let it thaw fully before a technician arrives, because a frozen coil cannot be diagnosed properly.
How long should an air conditioner last?
Central air systems generally run ten to fifteen years with regular maintenance, and window or wall units usually less. Age on its own is not a reason to replace — a well-maintained older system with one failed part is often worth repairing. What changes the maths is a major component failure, particularly the compressor.
Can you still recharge an R-22 system?
Yes, but only from reclaimed supply. US production and import of new R-22 ended in 2020, so what remains is recycled. That makes recharging an older R-22 system progressively less practical, and it is why we look for the leak rather than simply topping it up. If your system is on R-22 and leaking badly, we will be straight with you about whether repair is worth it — and if it is not, we will price the replacement the same visit so you are not paying twice to find out.
Do you charge to diagnose the problem?
Yes. We find out what has actually failed and explain it before any work is authorized, so you are deciding with real information rather than a guess. You get the diagnostic figure on the phone before anyone is dispatched, and after-hours, weekend and holiday calls are quoted the same way. Estimates for a new system are free.
Are you really available 24/7 for AC emergencies?
Yes, without qualification. Air conditioners fail in heat waves, and they do it in the evening. Emergency calls are answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year — nights, weekends and holidays included. Regular office hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
