We don’t charge to quote a job. We do charge to find a problem nobody has identified yet. Which one you need — and what it costs — gets agreed on the phone, so nothing about the cost is a surprise on the doorstep.
The rate you are told is the rate
You get the number on the phone, before anyone is dispatched, and it is what you are charged when the technician arrives. One rate across all four trades — plumbing, heating, cooling and gas.
What it pays for
A licensed, insured technician carrying the certifications the work needs, and the time to find what has actually failed — not a quick look and a guess.
Watch for the bait and switch
A call-out advertised at almost nothing gets recovered once someone is standing in your basement. Get the number before anyone travels — from us, or from anyone else you call — and hold them to it when they arrive.
Financing on larger jobs
A boiler that fails in January is not a purchase anyone planned. Financing is available on the big-ticket work, so a system replacement does not have to come out of savings in one go.
What it is normally used for
Boiler, furnace and water heater replacement, a full air conditioning system, a whole-house repipe, sewer and water main work, and larger contracting jobs — kitchens, bathrooms, dormers and extensions.
When to bring it up
At the estimate, before anything is scheduled. It is worth asking even if you think you will not need it, because knowing it is there changes what you are willing to consider fixing properly.

Common Faults
What Usually Goes Wrong
The complaints we hear most, and what is generally behind them.
Blowing Cold Air
The blower runs but the air is not warm. Often ignition failure, a flame sensor issue, or the furnace short-cycling on a safety before it can heat properly.
Will Not Turn On
No response at all. Tripped breaker, failed control board, thermostat fault or a safety switch doing its job — including the door switch, which catches more people than you would expect.
Short-Cycling
Firing and shutting down repeatedly before the house is warm. Restricted airflow from a clogged filter is the most common cause, and the easiest to rule out yourself.
Weak Airflow
Little coming out of the vents. Blower motor, capacitor, a filter nobody has changed, or duct problems. Weak airflow also causes the furnace to overheat and cut out.
Uneven Heat
Some rooms hot, others cold. Usually ductwork — leaks, poor balance or runs that were undersized when the house was built or extended.
Loud Bangs On Start-Up
A bang when the furnace lights can mean delayed ignition, which is worth attending to promptly rather than living with.
Burning Smell That Persists
A brief dusty smell on the first run of the season is normal. A persistent burning smell is not, and warrants shutting the system down and calling.
Carbon Monoxide Alarm
Leave the building and call the fire department. Do not troubleshoot this one. A cracked heat exchanger is the usual cause and it is a replacement, not a repair.

My furnace is blowing cold air. What is wrong?
Common causes are ignition failure, a dirty flame sensor, or the unit cutting out on a safety before it can heat. Start by checking the filter — a clogged one restricts airflow enough to make the furnace overheat and shut down, and it is the cheapest thing to eliminate.
How often should I change the filter?
Every one to three months depending on the filter type, whether you have pets and how hard the system runs. It is genuinely the single most effective thing you can do yourself. A large share of the emergency calls we take are furnaces cutting out on airflow restriction caused by a filter nobody had changed.
What is a cracked heat exchanger and why does it matter?
The heat exchanger separates combustion gases from the air circulating through your house. A crack lets those gases into the airstream, which is a carbon monoxide risk. It is not a repairable component — a cracked exchanger means the furnace is replaced. It is also the reason the annual inspection matters more than people think.
Some rooms never get warm. Is the furnace too small?
Sometimes, but far more often it is the ductwork — leaks losing heated air into the attic or crawlspace, poor balance, or runs undersized for an extension added later. Replacing the furnace will heat the same rooms the same way. It is worth diagnosing the distribution first, and we do that work too.
How long does a furnace last?
Typically fifteen to twenty years with regular maintenance. Age alone is not a reason to replace. What changes the calculation is a cracked heat exchanger, repeated annual breakdowns, or an old low-efficiency unit in a house that runs heat hard.
My carbon monoxide alarm went off. What do I do?
Leave the building and call the fire department from outside. Do not try to diagnose it yourself and do not restart the system. Once the property is confirmed safe, call us on 631-587-0085 and we will inspect the heat exchanger and combustion.

I'm extremely satisfied with the service I received from NJM. Neil is always quick to respond & does immaculate work. I've used them a few times now. First to install a new outdoor Air Conditioning unit and a new Evaporator Coil. And most recently, to replace a burnt out blower fan on my furnace.
