Plumbing, Heating & Cooling In Hicksville

More than half of Hicksville went up in the 1950s, and the water district is currently replacing distribution mains of exactly that age. The supply piping inside a house of the same vintage is at the same point in its life.

Plumbing, Heating & Cooling In Hicksville

Hicksville is a hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, and it is one of the purest examples of the post-war boom on Long Island. The population went from around eight thousand in 1950 to nearly fifty thousand by 1959, built straight onto former potato farms. Of the roughly thirteen and a half thousand housing units here, more than fifty-seven per cent went up in the 1950s alone, and the median house was built in 1955 — Capes, ranches and split-levels, eighty-five per cent of them owner-occupied.

That single decade of construction is why so much in Hicksville needs attention at the same time. The water district is currently running a phased replacement of distribution mains that date to the 1950s — one phase alone covered around fourteen thousand feet of main, twenty-five hydrants and three hundred and twenty service connections. The supply piping inside a house of the same vintage is at precisely the same point in its life.

Before you call

Two kinds of visit. You’ll know which before we come.

We don’t charge to quote a job. We do charge to find a problem nobody has identified yet. Which one you need — and what it costs — gets agreed on the phone, so nothing about the cost is a surprise on the doorstep.

Estimate visitNo charge

You already know what you want done

A boiler replaced, a bathroom rebuilt, a gas line run. We come out, look at the job and give you a number.

No obligation
Diagnostic visitQuoted on the call

Something has failed and nobody knows why

A licensed technician and the time to find what has actually gone wrong. One rate across plumbing, heating, cooling and gas, and one number to reach us on — there is no separate line to find at midnight. You get the figure before anyone is dispatched, and after-hours, weekend and holiday work is quoted the same way.

The rate you are told is the rate

You get the number on the phone, before anyone is dispatched, and it is what you are charged when the technician arrives. One rate across all four trades — plumbing, heating, cooling and gas.

What it pays for

A licensed, insured technician carrying the certifications the work needs, and the time to find what has actually failed — not a quick look and a guess.

Watch for the bait and switch

A call-out advertised at almost nothing gets recovered once someone is standing in your basement. Get the number before anyone travels — from us, or from anyone else you call — and hold them to it when they arrive.

Financing on larger jobs

A boiler that fails in January is not a purchase anyone planned. Financing is available on the big-ticket work, so a system replacement does not have to come out of savings in one go.

What it is normally used for

Boiler, furnace and water heater replacement, a full air conditioning system, a whole-house repipe, sewer and water main work, and larger contracting jobs — kitchens, bathrooms, dormers and extensions.

When to bring it up

At the estimate, before anything is scheduled. It is worth asking even if you think you will not need it, because knowing it is there changes what you are willing to consider fixing properly.

What it does not change

The price of the job. The quote is the quote whether you finance it or not — and on a straightforward repair it is usually not worth the paperwork. We will tell you which one you are looking at.

What We Do Here

Services In Hicksville

Water Services & Repipes

New and replacement service lines to district specification, and whole-house repipes where the original supply has closed up or started weeping at the joints.

Backflow Prevention

Hicksville Water District requires an RPZ or double-check assembly after the meter on new residential services, and annual testing by a state-certified tester. Irrigation systems need their own device.

Water Heaters & Tankless

Replacement, installation and repair, including high-efficiency tankless. Navien NSS certified for the units that need more than a reset.

Boilers & Furnaces

Heating plant in a 1950s Hicksville house is on its second or third generation. We install and service both, and we say plainly when a repair has stopped making sense.

Central Air & Ductless

Full systems and ductless mini-splits — the practical answer in a Cape or a split-level with no duct chase.

Gas Lines & Inspections

TASK 86/87 certified gas work. Oyster Bay requires a permit for heating furnace or burner installation and for fuel storage tanks, as well as for the piping itself.

Commercial Plumbing & HVAC

Hicksville has a substantial commercial base along Broadway and the 106 and 107 corridor, and a downtown being rebuilt around the LIRR station. Retail, offices and food service, with emergency cover for the failures that would close you.

24/7 Emergency Service

Every day of the year, residential and commercial, one number for all four trades.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Who issues plumbing permits in Hicksville?

The Town of Oyster Bay Building Division, part of the Department of Planning and Development. Hicksville is an unincorporated hamlet, so there is no separate village department. Permits are required for plumbing fixtures, sewer connections, drainage work, fuel storage tanks, heating furnace or burner installation, fire sprinklers and underground irrigation. Straight repairs and like-for-like fixture swaps generally are not.

What does the water district require for a new water service?

The Hicksville Water District ordinances are specific. One-inch and two-inch service lines must be Type K copper from the main to the curb stop, four inches and larger must be ductile iron, and the minimum bury depth is four feet six inches. An inverted-key curb cock in an iron curb box is required between the property line and the curb line. Only District employees may tap the main. New residential services need an RPZ or double-check backflow assembly after the meter, tested annually by a state-certified tester.

Is the tap water in Hicksville safe?

The district reports its water as meeting New York State standards. Groundwater across this part of Nassau County does have documented contamination — 1,4-dioxane and PFAS among them, and there are two federal Superfund sites in the area — and the Hicksville Water District has responded by taking affected wells offline and building advanced oxidation and granular activated carbon treatment, a programme expected to cost more than seventy million dollars. The district publishes an annual water quality report; that is the place to read the current numbers for your own supply, rather than taking anyone selling filtration at their word.

Do you handle commercial work in Hicksville?

Yes. Offices, retail and food service along Broadway and the Route 106 and 107 corridor, and the newer mixed-use development around the LIRR station. Same licensed crew, same 24/7 response, scheduled around trading hours where the job allows.

Do I need a backflow preventer on my sprinkler system?

Yes. The district requires permission before an underground irrigation system is installed, along with a backflow device that is tested annually, a programmable timer and a rain or soil-moisture sensor. There are also watering restrictions — odd and even days, and nothing between ten in the morning and four in the afternoon.

The experience I had with with NJM Mechanical & Contracting was a pleasant one. I had the pleasure of doing business with Neil. The work I had done was a basement entrance to my yard and it came out wonderful. The work performed as well as the communication is 10/10.
