Long Island is full of houses that never had ductwork and were never going to get it — Capes with converted attics, sunrooms, additions built onto a system that was already at its limit, and older homes where running ducts would mean tearing open finished space. A ductless mini-split solves that by skipping ducts entirely: an outdoor unit, refrigerant lines through a small penetration, and an indoor head that heats and cools the room it is in.
Two things are consistently misunderstood about them. They heat as well as cool, and modern units do it efficiently well below freezing — so a mini-split is a heating solution as much as an air conditioning one. And the installation quality is what determines whether you like it: line sets run properly and hidden, the head sited where the airflow works, and the condensate handled so it does not become a stain on your wall.

The rate you are told is the rate
You get the number on the phone, before anyone is dispatched, and it is what you are charged when the technician arrives. One rate across all four trades — plumbing, heating, cooling and gas.
What it pays for
A licensed, insured technician carrying the certifications the work needs, and the time to find what has actually failed — not a quick look and a guess.
Watch for the bait and switch
A call-out advertised at almost nothing gets recovered once someone is standing in your basement. Get the number before anyone travels — from us, or from anyone else you call — and hold them to it when they arrive.
Financing on larger jobs
A boiler that fails in January is not a purchase anyone planned. Financing is available on the big-ticket work, so a system replacement does not have to come out of savings in one go.

Boiler, furnace and water heater replacement, a full air conditioning system, a whole-house repipe, sewer and water main work, and larger contracting jobs — kitchens, bathrooms, dormers and extensions.

At the estimate, before anything is scheduled. It is worth asking even if you think you will not need it, because knowing it is there changes what you are willing to consider fixing properly.

Is It Right For You
When A Mini-Split Beats Central Air
Mini-splits win where ductwork does not exist or cannot reasonably be added — additions, converted attics, sunrooms, garages, older houses with no chases to run through. They also win where you want genuinely independent control room to room, because each head runs on its own rather than everything answering to a single thermostat. That matters most on an upstairs floor that behaves nothing like the rest of the house.
Central air still wins where good ductwork already exists, and where the visible indoor heads would bother you — they are wall-mounted units in the room, not grilles in a ceiling. Cost depends on how many zones you need: one head is usually cheaper than extending central air, while five or six heads may not be. We install both, so we have no reason to steer you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do mini-splits heat as well as cool?
Yes, and it is the most under-appreciated thing about them. A mini-split is a heat pump — it moves heat rather than burning fuel, and modern units continue to do so efficiently well below freezing. For an addition or a converted attic, one mini-split often replaces both extending the heating system and adding air conditioning.
How many indoor units do I need?
One per area you want independently controlled. A single head serves one room or an open-plan space well; it will not push conditioned air around corners into other rooms. The most common disappointment with mini-splits comes from expecting one head to serve a whole floor.
Are they noisy?
The indoor heads are notably quiet — usually quieter than the supply air noise from central air. The outdoor unit makes noise like any condenser, which is worth thinking about when siting it relative to a bedroom window or a neighbour’s.
How much wall damage does installation cause?
Very little. The refrigerant lines, drain and wiring pass through one small penetration per indoor head. That is precisely why mini-splits suit finished spaces where running ductwork would mean opening ceilings and building chases.
Are they expensive to run?
Generally efficient, particularly compared with electric resistance heating or with running a whole central system to condition one room. Because each zone runs independently, you are not heating or cooling space nobody is using — which is often where the real saving is.
Do they need maintenance?
Yes. Filters need regular cleaning, and the indoor coils benefit from periodic deep cleaning — mini-split heads accumulate dust and biological growth on the blower wheel that a filter rinse does not reach. It is the maintenance item most often skipped, and it shows up as reduced output and a musty smell.
Can they be installed in a commercial space?
Yes — offices, shops and back-of-house areas, particularly where different spaces need different temperatures or where the building has no practical route for ductwork.
