Geothermal Heating & Cooling For Long Island Homes

Geothermal does not burn anything. It moves heat between your house and the ground, which stays at a steady temperature year-round a few feet down regardless of what the weather is doing above it. In winter it draws heat from the ground into the house; in summer it runs the other way and takes heat out. One system, both jobs, no combustion in the building.

It is the largest up-front investment in heating we install, and the lowest running cost. That trade is the whole decision, and it depends on your property — whether there is room for the loop field, what the ground conditions are, and how long you plan to be in the house. NJM installs and services geothermal across Nassau and Suffolk County, and we will tell you plainly if your lot is not suited.

What We Do

Geothermal Services

Installation

Full installation of the ground loop, heat pump and distribution, with permits pulled and inspections attended.

Heating & Cooling In One

The same equipment handles both seasons, which removes a separate air conditioning system from the equation.

Integration With Radiant

Geothermal pairs particularly well with radiant floor heating, which runs at lower water temperatures. We install both.

Service & Repair

Maintenance and repair of existing geothermal systems, including ones we did not install.

Backup & Supplementary Heat

Where the design calls for it, integrated properly rather than bolted on.

System Design

Sizing the system and the loop field to the house and the property, rather than to a rule of thumb.

Site Assessment

An honest look at whether your lot suits horizontal or vertical loops — or neither. We will say so if it is the last one.

Alternatives, Honestly

If geothermal is not right for your property we install boilers, furnaces, radiant and heat pumps — so there is a good answer either way.

Heating — before you call

Two kinds of visit. You’ll know which before we come.

We don’t charge to quote a job. We do charge to find a problem nobody has identified yet. Which one you need — and what it costs — gets agreed on the phone, so nothing about the cost is a surprise on the doorstep.

Estimate visitNo charge

You already know what you want done

A boiler replaced, a bathroom rebuilt, a gas line run. We come out, look at the job and give you a number.

No obligation
Diagnostic visitQuoted on the call

Something has failed and nobody knows why

A licensed technician and the time to find what has actually gone wrong. One rate across plumbing, heating, cooling and gas, and one number to reach us on — there is no separate line to find at midnight. You get the figure before anyone is dispatched, and after-hours, weekend and holiday work is quoted the same way.

The rate you are told is the rate

You get the number on the phone, before anyone is dispatched, and it is what you are charged when the technician arrives. One rate across all four trades — plumbing, heating, cooling and gas.

What it pays for

A licensed, insured technician carrying the certifications the work needs, and the time to find what has actually failed — not a quick look and a guess.

Watch for the bait and switch

A call-out advertised at almost nothing gets recovered once someone is standing in your basement. Get the number before anyone travels — from us, or from anyone else you call — and hold them to it when they arrive.

Financing on larger jobs

A boiler that fails in January is not a purchase anyone planned. Financing is available on the big-ticket work, so a system replacement does not have to come out of savings in one go.

What it is normally used for

Boiler, furnace and water heater replacement, a full air conditioning system, a whole-house repipe, sewer and water main work, and larger contracting jobs — kitchens, bathrooms, dormers and extensions.

When to bring it up

At the estimate, before anything is scheduled. It is worth asking even if you think you will not need it, because knowing it is there changes what you are willing to consider fixing properly.

What it does not change

The price of the job. The quote is the quote whether you finance it or not — and on a straightforward repair it is usually not worth the paperwork. We will tell you which one you are looking at.

Is It Right For You

When Geothermal Makes Sense — And When It Does Not

The case for it is straightforward: no combustion, no flue, no fuel deliveries, very low running costs, and one system that heats and cools. Equipment sited indoors is not exposed to the weather, and ground loops are long-lived. For a house you intend to stay in, the running-cost saving accumulates for decades.

The case against is equally straightforward. It costs considerably more up front than a boiler or furnace, and installation is disruptive because the loop field has to go in the ground — either horizontally, which needs land, or vertically, which needs drilling. On a tight lot, or if you are likely to move within a few years, a high-efficiency conventional system is usually the better financial answer. We install those too, so we have no reason to push you either way.

Quick Rules Of Thumb

  • Heats and cools with one system, and burns nothing in the house
  • Highest up-front cost of anything we install, lowest running cost
  • Needs land for a horizontal loop, or drilling for a vertical one
  • Best suited to a house you intend to stay in
  • On a tight lot or a short horizon, high-efficiency conventional usually wins

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does geothermal actually work?

A few feet underground, the temperature stays fairly constant all year regardless of the weather above. Geothermal circulates fluid through buried loops to exchange heat with that ground — pulling heat out of it in winter to warm the house, and pushing heat into it in summer to cool the house. It moves heat rather than creating it, which is why running costs are low and nothing is burned indoors.

Does it cool as well as heat?

Yes, and that is a significant part of the value. One system does both, which means no separate air conditioning to buy, install or maintain.

How much land do I need?

It depends on which loop type suits the site. Horizontal loops are buried across an area of land and need room. Vertical loops are drilled and take far less surface area but cost more to install. On a tight Long Island lot vertical is often the only option, and sometimes neither is practical — we will tell you after looking rather than after starting.

Is geothermal worth the money?

It depends on how long you are staying. It is the highest up-front cost of anything we install and the lowest to run, so the saving accumulates over years. In a house you intend to keep, that is a strong case. If you may move within a few years, a high-efficiency conventional system is usually the better financial decision — and we install those too, so we have no stake in pushing you one way.

How disruptive is the installation?

More disruptive than a boiler replacement, because the loop field goes into the ground. Horizontal loops involve excavation across an area of the property; vertical loops involve drilling. We will explain exactly what happens on your lot before you commit.

How long does a geothermal system last?

The indoor equipment has a service life comparable to other heating equipment, while the buried ground loops are long-lived — they sit undisturbed underground and have no moving parts. That imbalance is part of why the long-term economics work.

Can geothermal run radiant floor heating?

Yes, and they pair unusually well. Radiant floors run at lower water temperatures than radiators, which is exactly the condition a heat pump is most efficient in. We install both, so it can be designed as one system rather than two that have to be made to cooperate.

Do you offer financing for geothermal?

Yes. Given the up-front cost relative to conventional heating, financing is often what makes geothermal viable. We finance through Synchrony, subject to credit approval. Ask when you call and we will go through the options.

Couldn't be happier with NJM Mechanical and Neil. I needed a new Navien wall mounted gas combination boiler. He showed up on Friday afternoon to diagnose and was at my house at 7am the very next morning on a Saturday throwing in my new Boiler. They didn't charge Emergency Service rates and they beat their competitors price by over $500!

Neil and his team showed up in an emergency situation where I had no heat because my furnace died. His professionalism and ability to diagnose the problem was incredible. My mom is 87 years old and he made her comfortable with his kindness. Thanks for warming our home, and our lives Neil. God bless you and your team!!
